Hauling My Own Garbage

Well, I'm a little slow on the get-go but when Gail sent me the link to the Green Circle blog this morning, I realized I have to belong to  the Trash Team and to Haul My Own Garbage too. Here is what I have so far, starting from this morning and throwing in a few things from the past few days to remind me of how I could be more conscious.
I compost almost all our food scraps, and since we didn't eat any meat today there was no garbage there. We also recycle almost everything. This is what is in the bag:
  • peanut can (minus the recyclable lid)
  • yogurt container & lid (quart size)
  • cap from half & half carton
  • plastic cup from beverage at my Sunday book group (I forgot to bring a real cup)
  • metal lid from glass jar
  • plastic 10% off card from Staples (unsolicted!)
  • plastic-lined pouch from Yogi tea bag (my favorite tea but maybe not a good option)

The rest of the Stuff of the Day went into the compost bucket (including the paper napkin from book group, a little waxed paper bag from Nori's that held bulk tumeric last week, and the crushed egg shells from the dish I made for tonight's potluck dinner) and the recycling bins (one for all the #1 and 2 plastic, waxed cartons, plastic bags, and glass and one for paper).

This evening I went to a nice little artsy awards dinner, potluck style. I took my garbage bag (see above) and wore my button (see below), and people really did ask me about my garbage. I made little slips of paper (printed on old reused paper from my mom's old, old very former job) that give the address of this blog so people could find out more about this crazy great project. Lots of takers and "right-on" type comments. Because I took my own wine glass, plate, fork, and napkin, I didn't have to add any of that debris to my bag (although a few people asked me to takes theirs!!!).

Coming up tomorrow, a women's film festival at Siena College. Wondering what the young people will have to say....
